Up to 70% of the hot water demand for a domestic property can be produced by the use of properly designed and installed solar thermal panels and a correctly configured hot water cylinder.

Using energy from sun-light these systems are extremely effective all year round, it doesn’t have to be hot to work. Through the summer nearly all of the required hot water can be produced by the solar panels, in the winter they act as a pre-heat so the boiler is heating water from a slightly higher starting temperature. Further advantages:

  • By using a twin coil un-vented hot water cylinder (provided), expensive electric powered showers can be replaced by a mixer shower as hot water is supplied at mains pressure; saving more electricity.
  • Kilo-Watt Hours (kWh) produced are recorded and can be used under future grant schemes to receive ‘feed-in’ payments. Click here to find out what grants are available.
  • The system requires the use of an electric pump so to make this system ‘cost free to run’, a PV array can be fitted to the side of the solar panels. This wouldn’t directly run the pump but would off set the cost, also more substantial grants would be available for the whole installation including a higher rate ‘feed-in’ tariff.

An average installation will cost from £4000 to £6000 installed.

Grants are available up to £450. Find out more.
