Wind turbines are an excellent form of renewable energy; in the correct location they can out perform all other technologies. Wind turbines create electricity, which is then fed back to the building and if not used fed back to the grid system. As with Photo-voltaic, this electricity is metered, so cash is accrued whether the energy is being used or not.
Wind turbines have had a bad reputation since a large DIY company miss-sold them to the general public without going through the required surveying process several years ago.
In fact they can play an important role along side PV if a property is to be completely separated from the national grid.
Location is the most important factor to consider when installing a wind turbine. Smaller wind turbines can be building mounted, but larger ones need to be mounted in the ground separate to the property.
They are ideal for rural or remote out buildings where getting mains power supply can cost tens of thousands of pounds, or used in domestic / commercial buildings to help off-set the cost of electricity.
Grants are available for the installation of wind turbines and in 2011 a ‘feed-in’ tariff is due to be implemented so that an income can be generated from their use, thus reducing the ‘Pay-Back’ period. Currently ROC Payments (Grants) can be claimed with certain electrical suppliers.
Noise levels are now nearly negligible and planning consent is now easier under new government guide lines to promote renewable technologies.
IDDEA Ltd will conduct a survey of a potential site taking into account regional average wind speeds and other factors which can affect the efficient operation of a wind turbine.
